Suovetaurilia
Pentelic marble, 6 feet long, from the imperial period. On the right: two
laurel trees and two altars crowned with fruit and garlands, before which
stands the presiding magistrate, ritually veiled, sprinkling incense from the
box held by an attendent. Another attendant carries a vase with a libation,
followed by the sacrificer with an ax and the three animals in order. Depicts
the old Italian sacrifice of a boar, a ram, and a bull, offered to Mars to
secure purification or lustratio. The ritual was performed at the end of
a five year period (lustrum), after the census was taken. The animals
processed three times around the assembled armed people and were then
sacrificed. Later it was offered on great occasions, e.g., triumphs, and to
other Capitoline deities (pp. 249-250).

Lectica: Sketch of
a Roman Litter
"The litter consists of an ordinary couch, to which
four posts carrying an arched canopy and a pair of poles have been added. Above
the canopy is a rod running lengthwise, to which curtains were fastened by
rings. The occupant could hide himself from view by drawing these curtains
across the sides" (p. 251). Carried by slaves, the litter was used in the city
more by women. Commonly used in the country and on long journeys by the wealthy
of both sexes, luxurious litters became fashionable in the empire.

Monopteros Temple(?) 1
Century BCE-1 Century CE
small (probably 9 columns), Pentelic marble,
without a cella, sacred to Apollo (?), excavated from the tiny area between the
Theater of Marcellus and Temple of Apollo Sosianus. Found with an inscription
recording Vespasian's dedication (69-79 CE) of a restored or reconstructed
ancient shrine connected to the Temple of Apollo Sosianus. Decorated with
bucrania and laurel branches, it may have housed the lustral water basin that
stood before the Temple of Apollo, used by Catiline to wash the blood of a
political rival from his hands.
