The craftsman-inventor Daedalus was born in Athens, son of Metion, himself a native Athenian. Ovid movingly retells the story of his son Icarus' plunge from the sky in Metamorphoses 8.183-235.
Although Daedalus attained epic fame for his genius as a craftsman, which included the creation of the Minotaur, the Labrynth, and wings for flight, Umbricius here decries his legacy to the Athenians of an endless versatility, which leaves the Romans no field for action.
