Rather than identify one of the more frightening characters portrayed by the mask, Umbricius focuses on those of its properties which could well alarm children -- lead white facial color and the huge mouth aperture, a grotesque exaggeration of human features which contributed to the visual farce and had the practical function of facilitating the projection of sound.
