Jupiter

Jupiter, identified with the Greek god Zeus, was both the supreme Olympian

deity and the controller of heavenly phenomena (weather, the seasons,

storms, clouds, thunder and lightning, etc.). The eagle and high places were

sacred to him, and he was considered the upholder of justice, sovereignty,

and law. Under the title Optimus Maximus, Jupiter was worshipped in Rome in

a temple on the Capitoline Hill begun under the Tarquin kings. It was in

this temple that magistrates offered sacrifices at the beginning of their

terms, the first meeting of the Senate was held each year, and victorious

generals dedicated their spoils. September 13, the anniversary of the

temple's dedication, was the date of the Ludi Romani.
