Resources:
- 2 Rooms: Circus, Bookshop
- Images and Links: Links contain images and information (including Latin terms) about various aspects of the circus and chariot racing: arch, track, turning posts, barrier, starting gates, stands, imperial enclosure, finish line, charioteers and racing factions, racing chariots, and racehorses.
- Objects: a chariot that will give the visitor a virtual ride around the track; Antoninus Pius, an English-speaking bot of the emperor; Jason, a Latin-speaking bot of the lead chariot horse; Medea, an English-speaking bot of another horse on the team. In the bookshop are Latin texts (with hyperlinked glossary, notes, translations) associated with the circus and chariot races. This collection of texts will grow, but currently there are 3 texts: a curse tablet, Martial 10.53 (epitaph for the charioteer Scorpus), Juvenal 11. 193-202 (a satiric description of the Megalesian games at the Circus Maximus).
Uses: Latin students can use the hyperlinked texts to read primary sources about the Circus Maximus and the sport of chariot racing; all students can learn more about these topics in an imaginative way by exploring the site, which is ideal for treasure-hunt style assignments (see Course Materials Repository for some examples).
