Directions: Roma, RegI
(to Porta Capena); Shortcut @go Porta
Capena
Resources:
- 12 Rooms: Porta Capena, Via
Appia, Clivus Martius, Burial Sites, Caecilia Metella, Milemarkers IV to XIV,
Aricia, Tarracina, Capua, Beneventum, Tarentum, Brundisium
- Images and Links: Various
maps detail the course of Via Appia from Rome to Brundisium; images include
several views of the current road, temple of Jupiter Anxur, Tiberius' grotto at
Sperlonga, and tombs (a "slide show" of 14 tombs and tombstones, and
; the plan and the remains of tomb of Caecilia Metella; tomb of Horatii and
Curiatii). Information is provided on the Servian wall, features of ancient
travel, cities along the route, and relevant historical figures (Appius
Claudius Caecus, Horace, Maecenas, the murder of Clodius, Cicero and his
demise), and references to Horace's Satire 5.
- Objects: There are several
bots, although their dialogue has not yet been developed: Caupo the innkeeper,
the spirit of Corvus (the Rostra's pet crow), and the emperor Trajan. The tomb
of Corvus is located near that of Caecilia Metella and has a link to the Latin
text and facing translation of Pliny, Natural History 10.121-123 (which
is also linked at the Rostra).
Uses: This is a natural site
for exploring; it is particularly good for helping students to understand the
difficulties of ancient travel as well as the remarkable engineering of the
Roman roads. There are two online treasure-hunt assignments specifically geared
to the Via Appia, one created by
Marianthe
Colakis, and the other by
Ryan Sellers
(scroll down to "VRoma Scavenger Hunt A"). Teachers using the
Oxford Latin Course Part III chapter 44, which tells the story of
Horace's trip to Brundisium using chunks of Satire 5, can send their
students to this site to learn more about Horace's route and the Via Appia in
general. Ecce Romani also has its characters travel on the Via Appia,
and teachers can use this more historical site in conjunction with Ryan
Seller's office and his
Villa of Q. Valerii Passeris, which are specifically geared to that portion
of Ecce.
