Travel in Roma Antiqua
Travel in the ancient world was difficult and dangerous but Romans were
frequent travelers nonetheless. They journeyed on land and sea for
business, military service, diplomatic missions and study. Wealthy
Romans also traveled to their vacation villas, to visit friends and often
just to go sight seeing. People walked carrying their own baggage.
Others rode donkeys, were carried in litters borne by slaves or in carriages
pulled by horses or donkeys.
