Pompeii and the Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius

I. Introduction- Earthquakes are a constant threat to the lives and well-being of those who live near them. In the year A.D. 79, the city of Pompeii, Italy, was destroyed so suddenly that many people died trying to flee the city. As a result the city became frozen in time and an excellent source of information for life in the first century A.D.

II. The Task/Quest - Gather information about earthquakes in general and Vesuvius in particular. You will be assigned individual roles to accomplish this task:

A. Photojournalist

B. News reporter

C. Emergency volunteer

D. Excavator

Working together you will design a multi-platform presentation to convey your learned knowledge about this disaster.

III. The Process-
A. Photojournalist- find pictures of people, places, animals, etc., before and after.

B. News Reporter- find information on the history of Pompeii and its earthquakes.

C. Emergency volunteer- find information about the victims. For example, how many people died? Who are they? What kinds of emergency provisions should people have in case of an earthquake?

D. Excavator- find information about the uncovering of Pompeii. Describe the progress of the work.

IV. Putting it all together-

A. Each person will type an outline of their own information. At the end of your report, give the sources for your information.

B. Together write a script for a newscast.

C. Together perform your script memorized in front of the class or videotaped.

D. Together synthesize your report into a magazine newspage written in Latin and include pictures.

E. Turn in the 4 outlines with sources, the script, and the Latin newspage.

V. Grading—
