Via Sacra |
Miliarium AureumAt the eastern edge of the rostra, Augustus set up a column covered in gold, which had inscribed on it the names of the major cities of the Roman Empire, and their distances from Rome. All those famous Roman milestones on the Via Appia and other roads leading out of Rome This would remind readers of the extent of the far-flung boundaries of the Empire and the extensive Roman roads that coursed across parts of three continents, and the central nature of the Forum itself. Unfortunately, little more than the base survives. |
