...confestim Romana inclinatur acies
fusaque est ad veterem portam Palati. Romulus et ipse turba fugientium actus, arma ad caelum tollens,
"Iuppiter, tuis" inquit "iussus avibus hic in Palatio prima urbi fundamenta ieci. Arcem iam scelere emptam
Sabini habent; inde huc armati superata media valle tendunt; at tu, pater deum hominumque, hinc saltem
arce hostes; deme terrorem Romanis fugamque foedam siste. Hic ego tibi templum Statori Iovi, quod
monumentum sit posteris tua praesenti ope servatam urbem esse, voveo."
...at once the Roman line is turned back and hurled to the old gate of the Palatine. Romulus himself, driven along by the crowd of fleeing soldiers, lifting his weapons to heaven says, "Jupiter, ordered by your birds (omens), I established here on the Palatine the first foundations for the city. The citadel, purchased by treachery, the Sabines now hold; from there the soldiers have overcome the middle of the valley, and now aim here. But you, father of gods and men, keep the enemy from here at least, take away the terror from the Romans, and stop this disgraceful flight! Here I vow to you a temple of Jove the Stayer, as a monument to future generations that by your propitious help the city was saved.
