pulpitum

The Romans used the word pulpitum to describe both the raised wooden speaker's platform and the actor's stage. The rural performance space that Umbricius celebrates here resembles what we know of the early Roman theater: a temporary stage set up in a flat public space, with or without formal audience seating, for the presentation of drama during a festival period.
