Help with Telnet and MOO clients
This page explains:
NOTE: If you will be using the VRoma Split Interface regularly, a
MOO client will serve you much better than plain telnet. If you generally
use the same computer, consider downloading a MOO client (see below)
instead of plain old telnet. You'll be glad you did.
How to manually launch telnet and log into the VRoma MOO
[NOTE: (1)"NCSA Telnet" is the name of the most commonly used Mac telnet program. (2) For Windows, look for C:\windows\telnet.exe]
- For Mac, launch Telnet, select "Open Connection" from the
"File" menu, type
www.vroma.org:8200
in the "Host"
box and hit return (note the colon before "8200").
- For Windows, launch telnet, select "remote system" from the "Connect"
menu, type
www.vroma.org
in the "Host Name" box and
8200
in the "Port" box, then click on "Connect".
- For both platforms, once you have launched telnet, you may have to turn
on "Local Echo" under Preferences to see what you are typing.
- In the telnet/client window, log into VRoma as follows:
- connect by typing
connect <name> <password>
where <name> is
your character name, and <password> is your password (omit the angle
brackets!).
How to download a MOO client and configure Netscape to launch it automatically (instead of telnet).
WINDOWS ONLY!
-
First, go to this page to download and install a specialized client
- After you have the client on your computer, point it at
www.vroma.org port 8200
(the method for this varies from
client to client, but they all generally have a "Configure" menu that asks
you for the address and port. www.colleges.org
is the (IP)
address, 8200
is the port). Please consult the documentation
for your client for specific instructions.
- Now you can tell Netscape to launch this client as your "Telnet Application" so that clicking on the "launch" link on the Gateway page will automatically take you to the VRoma MOO using this client.
- Under "Options" (at the top of the Netscape window), select "General Preferences".
- In the Preferences window, select "Apps".
- The top box is labeled "Telnet Application". This is where you will tell the browser where your MOO client is.
- Click on the "Browse" button to the right of this box.
- Now you will see a standard file system navigation window, asking you to find your telnet application/MOO client. Find your new MOO client application and select it.
- Now the path pointing to the MOO client should appear the "Telnet Application" box. Click "OK."
