Hardware and Software Requirements and Troubleshooting tips
for VRoma
Mac:
- A Power Mac with OS 8.1 or higher (8.0 might work, but will probably
be a bit flaky) with at least 24 MB RAM (less might work; more is better).
- Netscape 4.0.3-4.70 (at this time, higher versions will not work). You
should allocate at least 13000 K of memory to Netscape, 20000 K if you can
afford it!
PC
- Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT.
- MS Internet Explorer 3 or higher; Netscape 3-4.70 (at this time, higher
versions of Netscape will not work)
Other considerations and trouble-shooting tips:
- Make sure Java (and Javascript) is enabled on your browser. In
Netscape (version 4 and higher), go to "Preferences" under the "Edit" menu,
and click on "Advanced" tab. Make sure both "Enable Java" and "Enable
Javascript" are checked.
- Make sure your school is not using a proxy server. You can also check
this under "Preferences" ("Advanced" tab).
- Make sure your browser is accepting "cookies" (again, look under
"Advanced" in the Netscape preferences; in Internet Explorer, look at the
Advanced tab under "Internet Options" under the "View" menu). Your browser
should be configured to accept all cookies (at least while you are logged
into the VRoma MOO).
- Make sure your school has not disabled telnet use. This is a fairly
common security measure; your network support person will be able to tell
you this. It might be helpful to your tech. support staff to tell them that
access to VRoma requires the ability to telnet. Your school may also block
access to certain internet addresses or "ports" (sub-addresses). Tell your
network administrator that you need to be able to access www.vroma.org ports
7878 and 8200.
- Net congestion and/or slower modem can mean slow-loading pages. It can
take up to a minute or two for the first VRoma "room" to load!
- Be sure to read basic navigation and communication information once
you're in by Clicking on the "Basic Info" button in the Tool Bar.
- Once you're in, navigate by clicking on an exit name to move through
that exit to the next VRoma "room". Remember, you can't talk to others
logged into VRoma unless they are in the same room that you are in!
- If you click on a link in VRoma and nothing seems to happen, chances are
good that you forgot to close the smaller "pop-up" window. It's still there
with your new link, but it's probably hiding behind the main window. Close
this window each time to avoid the problem or arrange your screen so you can
see both.
- If you've never logged in before, visit the VRoma Help File Library first -- be
sure to look at the diagram of the Interface to help familiarize yourself
with the various parts of the VRoma screen.
